Today was a wonderful last day of 2012! We began with Engage. Next, we checked our editing #4 so please look for it, student-checked, in your child's blue take home folder. Then, we did a snowflake project with Mrs. Harvath's class in the science lab. The kids did an AMAZING job of making beautiful snowflakes. Then, we read through a Storyworks play together as a class. The kids really enjoy reading plays!
After lunch and PE, we had a locker clean-out. The final part of our day was our Holiday Party! THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL THE PARENTS WHO HELPED! We had an incredible turn-out of parents to help make our party a HUGE success! The kids really enjoyed making gingerbread men and cards for the children, and also making kaleidoscopes. Our party would not have been possible if it was not for the support of all the parents. THANK YOU AGAIN!!
At the very end of the day, some of the kids wanted to sing two popular holiday songs. Please see the videos by clicking on the POSTEROUS link to the left (under links).
I wish all of you and your families a peaceful and restful break. Enjoy the holidays and I cannot wait to see everyone in January.

Fabulous Friday!
Today was fabulous! We began with reading aloud and we are at a very exciting point in the book. I know the kids are doing a great job practicing our reading strategies from the week about envisioning and re-visioning our mental movies of the characters and settings we read about.
After Engage, we corrected the editing #3 practice sheet. Please look for your child's self-corrected paper that should return home. Next was math. In third grade math we had a catch-up day of fact quizzes, tenmarks and IXL.
During science we continued working on our collaborative dictionary of science terms we are studying. Please ask your child to show you our wiki page!
After lunch and PE (swimming), we read this week's TFK and then went to the Media Center. We also had some time to work on state reports. Lastly, we had a great class meeting about our character trait this week: GENEROSITY.
Thank you to those of you who generously donated to Sayreville Storm Relief. Your donation is sure to make a difference to the families in Sayreville, NJ.
As a note, here is an excerpt from an email earlier this week for next week's holiday party:
The students are invited to bring in one of the following UNWRAPPED gifts to their Winter Party. These OPTIONAL gifts will be collected and donated to the hospital. Prizes and gifts are an ongoing need in the Pediatric Department. They are used for prizes for pokes and medical procedures, birthdays and end of chemotherapy. (Note – this list is the department’s recommendations and what they need most):
a. Target, Best Buy or iTunes Gift Cards
b. Figures – Spongebob, Dora, Spiderman, Batman, Power Rangers and other Action Figures
c. Barbies
d. Bionicles, small Lego and Knex kits
e. Mini Play-dough
f. Controllers or Games for Xbox 360 (new or used welcome)
g. DVDs (new titles; new or used welcome)
h. Fisher Price Family Figures
i. Fiskars Kid’s Scissors
j. Markers
k. Decks of Playing Cards
Please consider a donation if possible. We talked about giving to others instead of ourselves during our classroom meeting today, so this might be of interest to your child.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Wednesday!
We had a great day today! After math we worked on reading. We used Nearpod for today's lesson and the kids really enjoyed it! In writing we began a new genre, realistic fiction. We will work on our realistic fiction stories until break.
After lunch and co-curriculars, we had science. We explored mass and the kids learned how to weigh items. I will post pictures on posterus soon!
Thank you for getting helping your child with the research project at home. I appreciate the time you will spend researching your state!
On Monday we corrected the editing practice #2, so it should have come home with your child. On Friday we will check editing #3 together so please look for that on Friday afternoon.
Thank you very much to all who have already donated to Sayreville. Your generous donations will be very much appreciated!
Also, please remember we are swimming in gym!
Have a great evening!

Thursday!
Today we were very busy! We began with math and then continued with reading. We continued to try to connect with the characters in our books through personal experiences. Next, we worked on writing our stories in Writer's Workshop.
After lunch and Engage, we spent the afternoon investigating light. We experimented with mirrors and flashlights to change the direction of light rays. It was amazing to see how well the kids experimented!
Please remember that spelling is due tomorrow. Also, editing practice #2 is due tomorrow.
Have a wonderful evening!

Wonderful Wednesday!
We had a wonderful day! We began with math. In workshop we had an excellent day of math. We reviewed fact families and then worked on the computer and identified patterns in multiplication at the enrichment station.
During Reader's Workshop, we continued yesterday's lesson. Each student was asked to jot about a personal experience that came to their mind while I read aloud. Please ask your child to share their jot with you.
Today we took a short amount of time to write about an embarrassing moment. I read a realistic fiction story (about an embarrassing moment) that I wrote to get us started.
After lunch, Spanish and art, we began to investigate light. Last, we corrected the editing practice #1. Please ask your child to show you his or her corrections. These corrections are valuable to the editing practice that is due on Friday.
Please remember that spelling is also due this Friday.
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful evening!

Tuesday was Teriffic!
We had a great day! It flew by due to the late start!
We began with math and had a great time in Math Workshop. We worked with turnaround facts and subtraction. The enrichment activity focused on using geoboard models to visualize multiplication facts. We also worked with fact triangles at the drill station and IXL on computers.
We had a great discussion about empathy during our mini-lesson for Reader's Workshop. We focused on what empathy is and how we can empathize with characters through our own personal experiences. Then, we continued reading from Out of My Mind and we practiced empathizing with Melody by thinking about our own personal experiences. Since we were short on time, we will continue this lesson tomorrow.
After lunch, PE and Spanish, we finished our energy investigation in science. We had great discussions and the kids really grasped our past week of experimentation with energy! We will begin learning about light tomorrow.
I distributed EDITING PRACTICE #2 and it is due Friday. The idea is to complete a few each day for continued reinforcement. Thank you for checking over your child's completed work before Friday! Also, spelling is due Friday.
Have a wonderful evening!

Monday was great!
We had a super Monday! We began with math during which we worked further with division and multiplication. We also practiced subtraction.
During reading workshop we worked on entering the world of the story and becoming the character. We are focusing on visualizing the characters and the setting.
We went to the library for checkout and to switch book room books. Please remind your child that we are focusing on reading just right books during reading workshop. Also, a fiction book will work best for our next few weeks of workshop.
After lunch and art, we had science all afternoon. We investigated how energy moves. Please have your child share the stations they visited in the lab, as well as share what they read about in the reading textbook.
Please note that tomorrow is a LATE START day. We will begin at 9:50.
Thank you VERY MUCH to those who have donated to the Sayreville Storm Relief. We have until Friday to continue collecting. It will really mean a lot and help the residents of Sayreville and the surrounding areas.
Have a WONDERFUL evening!
