What a GREAT Wednesday!

Today was a wonderful day! Today's post is LONG but EXCELLENT so please read to the bottom.  Also, please be sure to read my Hawaii blog starting this weekend!  :-)

We began our morning with reading workshop.  The creativity of our students is really shining with their projects!  Tomorrow will be the last day of Book Club with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.   After math, we read The Seashore Book, a wonderful story to exemplify a seed story.  Ask your child about the difference between a watermelon story and a seed story.  Today and tomorrow's writing workshop will focus on revising or starting a new small moment using the strategies we've already learned, with today's fabulous text in mind.

Third grade math:
Today was a great day!  We continued exploring who those pesky little basic facts are VERY useful after all!  We used basic facts to solve more complex problems.  It was a real eye-opener with regards to basic facts! We completed JPs 32, 33 and HL 2.2 is homework.
After lunch we had DEAR and then Engineering Technology! Our afternoon was FILLED science!  We investigated pore space in soil components - gravel, sand, clay and humus.  Please ask your child to share some of the observations they made today!

A couple of notes: Our class contract went home and hopefully you enjoyed reading it with your child.  We have an amazing team of 54 students who created the wonderful contract.  Also, there is going to be a GEOGRAPHY BEE coming to BCS along with a Choice Hour.  Here is the info:

BCS is going to hold a Geography Bee this year.  Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate.  We have scheduled the school-wide Bee for Tuesday, January 10th.  It will be held during the Choice Hour period.   The winner of the school bee will take a written test to qualify for the National Geographic State Bee.

The National Geographic Society runs the National Bee and provides the materials for the school bee.

Mr. Braisted has agreed to teach a Choice Hour class during 2nd Quarter for students in grades 4-8 who wish to learn more about Geography and prepare for the Bee together.  However, anyone in grades 4-8 can sign up for the Bee - students do not need to be in the Geography Choice Hour in order to participate in the Bee.

Please let your 4th graders know about the Bee!  I'd also appreciate it if you'd put a blurb about it on your blogs, if possible.

There is also a very fun GeoBee Challenge app available for iPad, iPod touch, and other mobile devices that students can use to quiz themselves.  The website National Geographic Bee - National Geographic has a wealth of information and activities for students interested in the bee as well as study materials for students who want to prepare on their own.

So here is an amazing piece of art from last week and this week, made by four wonderful students.  Next week, while I am away, two amazing students will use their very own iPad 2s to create the weekly comic strip.  I am so proud that we have the best 27 students in our homeroom!

Thank you to all the families to helped level our library.  It is absolutely wonderful to have such a wonderful library available to our students. As always, thank you so much for reading the blog and for checking and signing your child's planner!
